Bad Impressions turned into Charming Touches
I came in visiting from Chicago. The English charm, afternoon tea time and daily breakfast buffet drew me in. I read the reviews and I'll confirm one thing- It's dated. At first I wasn't impressed. It's more like 3 star..at best. Check-in felt a little odd, nothing wrong just a little off. Also, for the record, the pool was closed for renovations, parts of lobby were under renovations. My very first impression was "this is Ghetto fab's version of English royalty," but after staying there those impressions turned to touches of charm and thoughtfulness . First of all, the location. It's close to everything. Great location. Everything you need and might want is 5 mins away. There's a very popular Charlottesville bagel place across the parking lot, walking distance. You'll be okay. I had a suite because I wanted extra room for my teenage kids to hang out. I had plenty of room. The bed was fine. I'd give it a 4/5 stars. Shower was great. Water pressure was perfect. No complaints, nothing was left to be desired. I felt comfortable and had everything I needed in my room. We all enjoyed the afternoon tea time setup. I was impressed. Someone is thinking about that and it shows, it was a nice touch. Tea and hot chocolate is available. Cookies are too. It is a bit dated, but those things started turning into glimpses of charm. The hotel was quiet, easy to get around and comfortable. Parking is fine. Laundry is available, easy access for $2 per load to wash and/or dry.

Wonderful Stay
We spent one night at the English Inn. Check in was simple and our room was clean, comfortable and updated. The shower had shampoo and conditioner, but no bodywash, so make sure to bring some. The bathroom offered facial soap bars and hand soap and lotion in dispensers on the wall. If there was a hair dryer, I couldn't find it. Luckily, I did not need it. There were plenty of towels. The bed was comfy, but the pillows were very squishy. It was extremely quiet, so nice for sleeping. There is some construction going on, but it did not impact us at all. The breakfast buffet was very good and the dining area was kept very clean. There were eggs, egg casserole, french toast, biscuits with sausage gravy, egg casserole, bacon, and turkey sausage. There was cottage cheese with mandarin oranges, yogurt, cereal, milk, bagels, and tiny banana nut muffins. They had oatmeal and there were raisings to put in it, but it would have been nice to have bananas. There were apples and oranges for fresh fruit. I was happy to see they had decaf coffee, because many hotels do not offer that. The location was excellent, on a major road with many dining choices and gas stations nearby. Very accessible - only 15 minutes to Monticello and a few minutes to the downtown. Overall, excellent stay and highly recommend.

Disappointing stay.
There was a bit of restoration work going on. As you entered the lobby, there was a large plastic sheet covering one side of the lobby. The smell of paint was immediate. There was work going on in the area by the fireplace and there was orange tape blocking off a section. The indoor pool was also undergoing "restoration", and so it was not available. We also did not know it was "pet friendly", and we witnessed one occasion where two owners had their dogs barking at each other. They advertised serving tea during the 4 to 6 pm time, which included fresh cookies. We arrived at 5. Tea was available, but no cookies. When I asked, I was simply told they were none. I would think if you knew how many people you had as guests, you would be stocked. I know its a little thing, but it would have been nice if they had mentioned something on their website about the restoration work. After a long day (8 hours) on the road, it was not the best of greetings. We felt our room was fine. But it must have been a long week for staff as well, as both of the people I spoke with seemed tired and did not greet us with a smile. I might would try the English Inn at some point in the future, but for now, if we are in Charlottesville again, I will go elsewhere.

Good stay
I have paid almost twice what it cost here and the accommodations were just as good. Only thing is we didn't have any plastic utensils or dishware which would have helped as they don't carry them for rooms. Forgot that some places don't have them available

Excellent as Usual
We have stayed here several times. Each time has been fantastic. The rooms are clean and the hotel is renovating. The breakfast buffet is outstanding. It puts most hotel “complimentary” breakfasts to shame.

Comfortable stay, Great value
Although this is an older hotel, our rooms were quite updated with very comfortable beds and quality linens, excellent pressure in the shower with instant hot water, and unexpected perk of fridge and microwave. Complimentary breakfast was also better than generally expected. Only complaint was that I didn’t know the hotel was in the middle of some renovations, and wasn’t able to utilize the indoor pool.
