The Golden Fleece is utterly charming, warm, and friendly. We stayed in the room just above the pub, with a view down the Shambles, under the watchful eye of the Ghost Cat, and it was an absolute delight. The floor, as is common in buildings of this age, isn't even, but the people who run the inn have made certain that the bed, the tub, and other important furniture are level, so you won't feel like you're falling off of the bed at night. The place is kept up nicely, the room was very clean, and the pub downstairs serves wonderful food. The included breakfast options are tasty and filling, and the staff was so, so friendly and kind. The only negative that we experienced wasn't the fault of the staff in any way- our first night there, some unruly patrons apparently decided to start a fight downstairs, at the front door, but it was over quickly, and the night after that was completely quiet overnight. We didn't experience any haunting activity- and my companion and I are both sensitive to that sort of thing- but we absolutely didn't mind. The view out the window, the friendly staff, the excellent food and drink- all of these make this the BEST place to stay in York, as far as I'm concerned! The Fleece is definitely going to be our first choice, when we return to York. I highly recommend it!
