What a beautiful place for a mother/daughter adventure in Kyoto! The entire place is pristine and welcoming. The staff is attentive and was very helpful with our requests such as booking massages or scheduling a taxi. The location is within walking distance to all the great attractions but tucked in a quiet street in front of a little river, making it a serene environment after a day full of activities. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and the lounge area offered drinks and little snacks in the afternoon, which was very nice. If ever back in Kyoto, Akekure will be our go to place!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Akekure hotel. It was brilliantly located in a quiet spot next to a canal, but within 5 minutes you could be in the action of Gion. There were lots of delicious restaurants right nearby. Great location overall. The room was beautiful and immaculately clean. We also had plenty of room for suitcases, but we did book one of the bigger rooms. We thoroughly enjoyed the in-shower onsen as well. The hotel provided a lot of nice touches, such as free drinks in the lounge from 3pm onward. Also the onsite laundry machines were a very nice perk that allowed us to refresh midway through our trip. A great stay overall!

Best stay of our whole trip. Tons of room in the hotels and a beautifully displayed Kyoto style breakfast at a customized time each morning. Staff was always friendly and cordial. We will be looking forward to our next stay here when we are in the area again! 10/10 would highly recommend

FIVE STARS! This was by far the best hotel in all of our Japan trip. The staff was excellent and super nice! The room was super spacious and the bathroom was huge - we loved the shower. They also had some snacks and water available all the time as compliments and were refilled daily. Location was also great, with Kyotos Gion District for dinning and largest Temples all within a short walk.

The location was amazing, right beside a river and walking distance from the center of Gion. The staff were extremely professional and attentive. The room was beautiful, with elegant modernized ryokan-style decor and a huge Japanese bath. A very new luxury property, with all the little details such as touchless elevator buttons. Definitely coming back.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel in Kyoto. The property was exceptionally clean and very well maintained, and everything felt modern and comfortable. The staff truly stood out throughout our visit — everyone was extremely polite, professional, and genuinely helpful with recommendations, directions, and any requests we had. The location was also very convenient for exploring Kyoto’s main attractions, with easy access to temples, shopping areas, restaurants, and public transportation. Despite being centrally located, the hotel was surprisingly quiet at night, which made it very relaxing after busy sightseeing days. Breakfast each morning was excellent, with a great variety of fresh and high-quality options. Overall, this hotel exceeded our expectations, and we would absolutely stay here again on our next trip to Kyoto.

Even though I’ve visited Kyoto more than seven times, this was my first stay at this luxury hotel—and it was truly unforgettable. From the stunning exterior to the pristine room condition and the serene river flowing right in front, the peaceful atmosphere offered deep healing just by sitting there. Above all, the hospitality and service were world-class; I truly felt like I was receiving the best service Kyoto has to offer. The location is also perfect: just 5 minutes from the station and a 10-minute walk to the downtown area, with many major attractions within walking distance. Waking up in the morning, opening the window, and listening to the sound of the water and the gentle breeze was a highlight of my trip. It was a perfect stay in every way.

AKEKURE Kyoto Shirakawa — 10/10. Full stop. There are hotels that get everything right. And then there’s AKEKURE. This nine-room boutique opened in December 2025 and it already feels like it’s been here forever — like it was always supposed to exist exactly where it does, tucked among willow trees along a small river in one of Kyoto’s most quietly beautiful neighborhoods. We arrived at 3pm. The exterior stopped us before we even walked in. The facade is considered and deliberate — the kind of design that tells you immediately someone cared deeply about every decision made here. The security doors opened, the staff came forward, and from that moment the experience never dipped below exceptional. The team spoke English fluently, which mattered for our family, but more than the language — they were warm without being performative. Professional without being stiff. They walked us to our room, explained every amenity, and because I mentioned I have a background in architecture, they took the time to walk me through specific design decisions made during construction. That kind of attentiveness isn’t trained. It’s culture. The room itself. Surrounded by willow trees. A small river visible from the window. Kyoto quiet in a way that Tokyo simply isn’t. Breakfast is Japanese-style Kyoto cuisine prepared under the supervision of HANAKAGAMI. It is not a breakfast. It is an experience with all five senses engaged simultaneously. Every dish intentional, every ingredient considered. The lob

Just had a great stay. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Awesome location for tourism along a canal in a quit spot near public transport. Free beer/sake and snacks at night. Beautiful/clean rooms. Only complaint is that the rooms don’t have black out curtains, so sleep can be hard for those that are light sensitive.
