A very well presented room with a comfortable bed.

Such a shame that the White Bear is not currently open as a pub or restaurant. Had to walk up the street to their sister pub to check in and then let myself into the building through the side door. The lack of staff at the property is a massive downer and had it been noted on Hotels.com that it wouldn’t be manned, I wouldn’t have booked here.
The room was pretty clean but small as you’d expect from a single. The toilet uses a macerator which is also plumbed into the shower meaning it will run the whole time you’re in the shower - apologies to the neighbours!

When I arrived at the White Bear it had closed down. Worrying? Not the case because there was a notice on the door saying that while the bar was finished, the key was available from the Green Dragon 100 metres away. The barman called someone who came quickly and let me in but I had to carrying my luggage 200 metres further than expected.
The room was along a dark corridor and upstairs which caused fumbling, and was small so hard to navigate. The bathroom had too small a sink which could have been bigger if it had been fixed against another wall. The lack of space to put my toiletries made me put them on the top of the toilet which was curved so they slid off onto the floor. A bodged job? Not entirely but more thought could have gone into the installations

Tried to contact hotels .com
Booked YOWB to stay with my elderly mother aged 88 yrs . We booked it on the 30th May as we were at a wedding at Kirklington that day . I phoned the White Bear to say we wouldn’t be there until 4 pm ish but was told to contact the Green Dragon which I thought was slightly odd and also to check in via the Green Dragon . On arrival to Bedale I had to find a disabled parking spot near to the Green Dragon and told my mother to stay in the car whilst I checked in . They gave me the Keys and told me I needed to drive down to the white Bear and let myself in through the side entrance . I drove down to park as close as I could to the white bear . I had two cabin bags and my mother using a tripod . I noticed the pub itself looked abandoned and had obviously been closed for some considerably long time . I used the key to get through the side entrance where I was met with post laying on the floor also no one there to greet us . I told my mum to stay where she was as I went up the steep steps to investigate. All the bedroom doors were unlocked and could help myself to any bedroom . We were the only people there and immediately felt unsafe as the pub downstairs was abandoned , what would happen if there was a fire etc ? Who might be able to get in . I locked up and got my mum back into the car and drove back to the Green Dragon . I told them how unhappy I was and they didn’t seem surprised. We then had to drive all the way back to Leeds .

I don’t normally write reviews, it’s not my thing but my experience on this stay changed that!
To start, the pub the rooms are above is closed. You have to walk up the road to the Green Dragon to collect your keys. The entrance is at the side of the building, a grubby door that doesn’t open properly and is one step from the road. The premises is situated on a pretty busy crossroads in the High St and the only parking is a long stay car park a 5 minute walk away.
The room was clean and the bed comfortable but the shower room tiny. The toilet works off a macerater but kicks in when you use the sink and the shower too. It’s very noisy and you could hear them in other rooms. Our only hot water through the stay was the kettle or electric shower. I couldn’t shave as the plug didn’t work.
We were woken at 6.30am by the fire alarm going off and had to trapes in our pyjamas into the high st. It quickly became clear there was no fire and also no staff on the premises. When we went back inside the staff quarters were propped open with a box, presumably to give the impression they were occupied. We rang an emergency number on our key fob which went to voicemail twice. By 7.15 we left for breakfast somewhere with the fire alarm still ringing. Nobody from the premises ever returned our call and it was only fortunate we were out for the rest of the day.
Given the choice between staying here again or sleeping in my car, I’ll take the car!
