Khao San Road really takes off at night, with neon signs flickering into life, music blasting from streetside sound systems, while the masses begin mapping out the long, alcohol-soaked night in front of them. Some of the truly thrifty even opt to purchase beers from the local 7-Eleven and drink on the street.

From relatively upscale bars to the quiet tranquillity of back-alley spots, or the crude charms of a curbside cocktail shack (complete with plastic stools and ghetto blaster), there's something to suit almost every mood, taste, budget and state of cleanliness. Clubs play from hip hop to rock and reggae, while several pubs and bars offer live music. Check out our guide to the best nightlife experiences around Khao San Road.

    The Club Khaosan Bangkok

    The Club Khaosan Bangkok
    • Nightlife

The Club Khaosan Bangkok offers the full-on hands-in-the-air 'rave' experience (complete with complimentary glow-sticks). It’s the sort of sleek, snazzy joint you'd expect to find in Europe. What it also has is a big dancefloor with high ceilings, agitated lasers, UV lights, oversize disco ball, and a raised DJ booth with trippy visuals working the backdrop.

Laserbeams flicker through louvred Mediterranean doorways, while travelers high on life and Thai whiskey bounce through clouds of dry ice. Do come here to dance like a lunatic or for one of their full-moon beach parties, when this often half-empty venue comes alive with sand, deck-chairs and bigger crowds.

    Adhere The 13th Blue Bar

    Adhere The 13th Blue Bar
    • Nightlife

Adhere The 13th Blue Bar strips it down to the raw essentials with bar, tables and instruments. It’s a diminutive blues and jazz spot that never fails to make a big impression on those who find it. Only on weekends, when the earthy sounds and people spill out on to the street would you notice it on passing – it's a tiny hole in the wall.

Despite the bare, bohemian feel, there's a warm, welcoming atmosphere that attracts Thais, discerning tourists and expats in equal numbers. A resident blues band with a loyal following usually plays from around 10pm. Occasional special events and frequent jams by other locals ensures a bit of variety for the regulars. The beers are also reasonably priced.

    Brick Bar

    Brick Bar
    • Nightlife

Dark, cavernous and with its signature red brick walls, Brick Bar has a distinctly European air that's matched by some serious attention to music. With low lighting and a live music policy that skirts deftly between jazz, blues and ska, this intimate venue is a real magnet for boisterous locals. Best of all, the resident band is a colorful Thai outfit that's renowned for their original songs.

    Superflow City Beach Club

    Superflow City Beach Club
    • Nightlife

Superflow is billed as the first-ever day and nightclub on Khao San. If you’re coming early for drinks, you can expect a more subdued atmosphere. It takes on a funky beach theme, with real sand, sun loungers, palm trees, and bamboo hut-style bars dotted around the enormous venue.

The party really starts to kick in when it's closer to midnight. House music is pumped out from the central DJ booth, and along with cheap cocktail buckets and skimpily-dressed tourists, there’s a real beach party vibe in force – check out their Koh Phangan-inspired ‘full moon’ parties on weekends.

    Mollybar

    Mollybar
    • Nightlife

Mollybar is a bar and club towards the top end of Soi Rumbuttri, a street running parallel to Khao San Road. It’s set in a beautiful whitewashed house with twinkling fairy lights, offering a great place for chilling and watching the world go by. Still, many prefer to arrive a little later, when most people move inside.

A band plays standard covers to a mixed crowd of Thais and tourists on the ground floor, while upstairs, there’s a DJ playing anything that gets you tapping your feet and shaking your body. To get here, cut through Soi Suzie that connects Khao San Road to Rumbuttri, and Mollybar is a few bars to the right.

    Cinnamon

    • Nightlife

Cinnamon is hidden away on the road parallel to Khao San Road, Soi Rambuttri, and has 'discovery' written all over it. A neat water feature wall lines the narrow pathway entrance.

This striking entrance, however, is outdone by a chic modern interior consisting of 2 intimate floors of sleek glass and steel, with lots of funky furniture. The cocktails are a winner here, and there's a backroom to cater for all your dancing needs.

    Hippie de Bar

    • Nightlife

A funky jewel of a bar in an area drowning in tastelessness, Hippie de Bar is all cool kitsch and cool kids. In a small courtyard, you'll find a cozy 2-storey house decked out in old school memorabilia.

This artsy interior draws gangs of hip Thai adolescents, while the greenery and serenity of the fairy-light lit courtyard appeals more to backpackers. Add a good line in tangy cocktails and superb Thai grub, you've got one of the few places on Khao San Road with real personality.

    Jham-Jun Bar & Bistro

    • Nightlife

Jham-Jun Bar & Bistro is a decent rooftop bar that's very popular with the Khao San crowd. Views from the top are nice (you can see the impressive Rama VIII Bridge and Phra Sumera fortress) along with plenty of other perks.

The cute fake-grass lawn at the very top is a nice gimmick (with comfy floor seating). An in-house band play local covers as the sun sets over the Old City. To find it, enter Fortville Guesthouse (around the corner from Phra Arthit Road) and take the elevator to the 5th floor.

    Roof Bar

    • Nightlife

One of the best views of the Khao San is from the seats that run along the open side of the casual Roof Bar. Every night, it hosts a series of acoustic music sessions, covering classics from Billy Joel to Oasis. While the format is very similar to many of the bars along this famous strip, the vibe is very different.

Roof Bar's slightly more expensive drinks mean the crowd aren’t just there to get drunk, but they still want to have a good time. If the madness of Khao San is too much for you, this is an excellent place to enjoy the evening. Grab a classic cocktail and enjoy a less chaotic evening than those partying in the street below.

Location: 3rd Fl, Center Point Plaza, 183-185 Khaosan Rd, Talat Yot, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Open: Daily from 4.30pm to 1.30am
