Good Value but not such a pleasant stay
We got a really good deal on the room, but the room was in quite a bit of repair. The bed was the worst as it was lumpy and I couldn’t sleep well. The heat did not work but the space heaters did provide enough heat. The shower hard to regulate as knob kept falling off. I think I would not return.

Solbakken, A Gift From The Past
Ahh, Minnesota’s North Shore, Lake Superior! Solbakken Resort was cozy, comfortable, and quiet. Part of its charm is being rustic in structure and history! Our room was located in the Lodge with a door that opened up to a patio in full view and sound of the lakes majestic character! This resort aims to please and makes their patrons feel special! We will be returning!

Sunrise view
We did the Circle tour and Solbakkens was our last night on the road. The resort is a cabin style with a lodge where you can use the spa, play pool, do a puzzle or read and relax. Bed was comfortable but a bit squeaky. Loved the lakefront view of Lake Superior in the morning! No breakfast and we went over to nearby ski resort for supper.

Peaceful. You can sit on the back deck, and enjoy the view of Lake Superior over the top of cabins down closer to the lake. You can feel the lake breeze and hear the waves on the rocky shore, which only takes 1 or 2 minutes to walk to.

On the pro side, the grounds and location are excellent as are the staff. They were very helpful and eager to please. On the con side, the physical property is much in need of a complete revamp. The room was dark with only two lamps. We had a unit with a kitchenette. There is no light over the stove and I had to wear a headlight to cook. The only way I could get the pan hot enough to fry bacon was to turn the burner to max. In the bathroom, the faucet in the sink would barely spit out a little water and definitely not enough to get the water hot. The shower was only marginally better and the control knob fell off at one point. Finally, the heater did not work and they had to give us a portable space heater to warm the room.

We will be back.
We arrived later than we thought. The young women working at the counter were so friendly and welcoming. The room was charming and comfortable. What was really wonderful is that although it is next to the highway, we didn't hear the road from inside our room. The view out our window was incredible. We will be staying again.

Fix the water problems
I have never checked into a motel/hotel where you were handed a gallon of bottled water because of the quality of the well water. I reserved most of the water to fill my water bottles for the next day leaving none for the coffee pot. Big mistake. The water made even the coffee barely tolerable. I could not even feel clean taking a shower. The soap never really washed off leaving a sticky feeling. Could not eat to get to my next hotel to use their shower. Nice location and helpful owner, but the water issues take away from the place.

Fun lodge feel to our room. The main lodge room/lobby was great; filled with games, puzzles, books, and a pool table. Also had snacks, beverages and ice cream treats for sale which satisfied our cravings. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio of our room, that faced Lake Superior.
