The welcome was fantastic
We have travelled and stayed in too many hotels to count. There have so far been 2 that have stood out in our minds as giving excellent service. The Loch Maree has jumped to number one. Duncan who welcomed us, was fantastic. He surpassed any previous number ones! He could not do enough to help and make sure that we were comfortable and had all that we needed. When the Callan, came back from his holiday, he again was lovely, helpful and kind, but Duncan had already taken the top spot. The food was very good. We noticed that some people complained about the lack of choice. It is the end of the season and hotels are closing down, so naturally the choice will be a bit less. Each night there was a couple of different choices, from the night before. Had absolutely no complaint about the food, presentation and flavours.

2/10 Poor

Loved the view. Heating and toilet did not work properly, No signal on TV. Terrible water pressure. Poor lighting. Sagging mattress on single bed. Hole in wall leading to eaves. Door wouldn't lock. Very poor dining quality. Only one salt and pepper pot between the whole dining room. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Very old, dated hotel. WAY overpriced. Cold, terrible water pressure and temperature. Room was TINY, bed saggy, pillows hard as a rock. Food was bland and uninteresting. Hotel appeared to have turned off the heat at night to the in-room heaters. Some kind of animal got into the room through the side wall of the bath tub!!

Unfortunately for us the hotel is under recently appointed new management and there is a lot to work on in terms of general hospitality skills and in particular the dining experience . Dinner menu very limited - appear to be aiming for fine dining but i would argue that most NC500 travellers are not looking for this. Service was very slow to the point of embarassing. Breakfast menu was better but cooked food for 1 of us was cold and therefore not eaten .

Fabulous views over loch maree. Stayed during NC500 road trip. Quiant hotel. Waiter service for meals. (Lovely to be waited on) Water comes from waterfall nearby so water pressure for shower is poor, but ok for a bath. But wouldn’t stop me from returning. Staff very welcoming and polite.

Excellent attentive and helpful staff, breakfast was high quality and with plenty of choice. The location on the side of the loch with some incredible views was fantastic. However the hotel has some issues, namely limited or no water pressure. This is recognised by the hotel but does mean that showers are a dribble and don’t bother trying to run a bath. We had a great experience Sea Kayaking but got back to the hotel wet and cold unable to shower properly. We stayed in room 6 and the bathroom is in dire need of an upgrade with the floor Lino lifting in places, the radiator thermostat trapped against the wall and a glass shelf missing above the sink. The old thermostat on the radiator in the bedroom was not attached properly and fell off when adjusted. Both rooms were very clean. The other issue for us was dinner. We were not expecting or informed about the menu until we sat down late evening. Very expensive and limited choice. Fine Dining. It was high quality, well presented but not really for us.

Great hotel to get away from it all
Really lovely hotel with cosy lounge with open fire-perfect venue for colder autumn nights. Room was lovely and everywhere seemed freshly painted. Food was good with large portions. Beautiful view and well worth staying for a few days. Very much the Victorian country house hotel.

Tired but functional - a work in progress!
It is in a beautiful location. The Manager was extremely helpful and friendly but he was the only member of staff front of house. It has just been taken over so hopefully things will improve. The whole place was tired and needs some TLC.

A Scottish treasure
A fabulous location for a hotel that is going to be a huge success. The rooms need a bit of updating but were comfortable and had a great nights sleep. Food was fabulous and the manager/bellboy/waiter/receptionist/barman was a pleasure to deal with. His service and attention to detail was absolutely first class

Brown water!!
The best part of this hotel was the view over the Loch The hotel seemed to be run by only two people one was the chef and the other man was in charge of the reception, bar and served dinner and for all I know probably cleaned the rooms.! he was however very friendly and helpful. The problems I found with this hotel were that the room was expensive for what you got,I guess you pay extra for the view and also £6 for a bottle of beer is excessive. One of our main complaints was that the water coming out of the taps was brown and on querying it with the man of many jobs we were told that it came from the Loch and went through filters and was safe for us.Needless to say we did not wash that night. For these reasons I would not recommend using this hotel

We were in a top floor room, basically the attic, on a hot day and warm evening. No fans. No airconditioning. It was very uncomfortable. Halfway through the night we found the bathroom heater on, with no way to turn it off, which had made matters worse. We opened the window to let in some cooler air - a blowfly flew in and buzzed around in the night (no fly screens, no fly spray). The bed creaked, which woke me when I turned over - I ended up putting the mattress on the floor. So I had a pretty poor night's sleep. The 'shower' was woeful - very little pressure and what looked like tiny shavings of metal (?) came out. I ended up part filling the bath and kneeling to get a full wash. The hotel says Queen Victoria slept there - what may have been ok in her day is not ok now. On the plus side, hotel management was polite and welcoming. The evening meal was good, if a little expensive (over 50 pounds for two pastas, one glass of wine and a smoked salmon starter). And the location is excellent. But I would not stay there again.

2/10 Poor

Having traveled around England and Scotland, we found the staff to be friendly and willing to answer questions with patience and a friendly smil for a foreigner. Not so here. The bathroom was not very nice. With a tub, handheld shower and a note to only use shower for hair washing. My husband cannot sit in a tub, so that meant no washing for him. The hose and shower head did not look very clean, so none for me either. The toilet handle was ready to fall off and wouldn’t stop running when flushed. My husband did get it to shut off. The breakfast was included, but had very little. So different than other places. So far in our trip, this is the worst place we stayed. Very disappointed.

On the NC500 which probably keeps it going.
I didn’t find the owners to be very friendly. They had rules & an unusual way of running the hotel. The dining room was locked when not serving and it was the only room with a view of the loch ( unless you had a room with a view). No shower, only a bath. Limited WiFi but that was ok’ish. Food was limited & average. The breakfast was just ok. No choice of egg, fried and oily.
