4/10 Fair

Worst in decades of travel
Well…it started off badly. We called ahead twice for instructions to get access and we’re told there would be a note waiting for us on arrival. Found the note and followed the directions to the unit. At the top of the stairs I heard a voice shouting”who are you and what are you doing in my house?” I couldn’t see anyone yet but replied that we were there to rent her suite. She finally appeared, her hair in a towel, admitted she was in the shower! She said we couldn’t possibly be as she knew who to expect. She told us to get out and she and my husband hashed it out. After dealing with the passive-aggressive hostility, we were given access to a different unit and settled in. Inside the unit we had no water glasses. We had a mug with water still in it and another one with a sticky rim. There was no Kleenex. The 2 steps down to the bathroom was dangerous and another step to the shower area was a construction zone in progress. A long cobweb strung out from the shower light and water was still on the shower step! The bed was saggy and tippy- felt like sleeping in a bucket seat. Finally…sharing the 2- car drive with the owner and two other visitors didn’t work for us as we had an early morning ferry to catch, therefore we had to park across the street.

The property is tired and needs a lot of updating. Access to our room up a narrow spiral staircase would’ve been very challenging to some guests. Sadly the owner did little to make us feel welcome - as other reviewers have commented, we felt more an inconvenience than paying guests. Our bedroom and bathroom were clean enough, but the communal areas, especially the kitchen/breakfast room, were cluttered and messy.

Firstly, there was insufficient parking on the property, forcing us to park across the street and carry our suitcases from there. We then had to carry them up to the second floor via a very narrow, spiral staircase, which made it impossible to bring larger luggage into the room. Additionally, we were not informed that our room would be on the second floor when we made the booking. While the room itself wasn't dirty, the first floor was very messy cluttered and unclean. Windows are all covered improperly with thin layer of paper fabric while all of them were also 20 cm smaller than the windows from each sides therefore light waked us up very early morning. Although the host was ok, she lacked basic hospitality skills. Overall, this was by far the worst experience we've ever had on any of our trips.

This b&b isn’t near downtown or cow bay but just a short drive away. The main house has some very unique features. Our room had comfortable beds, but a burnt curtain from a heat register too close to the bottom of it so we tied it up and away. We would have told the owner but she isn’t your typical warm and fuzzy b&b person. She seemed super stressed and too busy. We asked if there was feathers in the bed duvet and she seemed offended even though the ad says there were feather duvets. She assured us they were synthetic. When we got to Our room and checked we were sure they were feathers so we removed it and brought in our own blankets. During breakfast we had to listen to her rant about another couples bad review over her lack of charm at 4:30 am as she took the time to get up and make them their breakfast. She has dogs in the breakfast area and made us feel very uncomfortable for asking they be fed in another room due to my friends allergies. I don’t think she realizes how she comes off to others. Very abrupt. She said she’s running other businesses and it’s the end of a busy tourist season so I’m hoping she’s just needing a break. Maybe you’ll get luckier and be greeted nicely instead of snappy. I was almost too intimidated to ask to Put our cold pack in her freezer as our room didn’t have the fridge it was supposed to have. Because of the price I would stay again but get my breakfast to go.

We had the north room, which was large and comfortable. It was accessible via a tight spiral staircase indoors or an easy staircase from outdoors. The hostess was not as outgoing as some B&B owners but she was pleasant and happy to have breakfast ready very early before our fishing charter. Breakfast was good but more basic than some B&Bs. Several menu choices were offered. Dogs were noisy on arrival but quiet otherwise. Those looking for a classic B&B experience with an elaborate breakfast and a chatty hostess might be mildly disappointed, but if you are happy with a comfortable room and good breakfast for a fair price this is a good choice.

The property was all but neat and not very clean. Other guests were terribly noisy and the landlady either did not want to or did not seem to be able to request them to be less noisy. She also was not very friendly when and after we checked in.

2/10 Poor

Very Dissapointed
We do not recommend this B&B. Out of all the stays this far in our 32 days road trip it is the worst. Host shouldn't be in hospitality. Very poor welcome, no clarity on protocols, old tired decor, furnishings, bedding and towels. No curtains, blinds didn't fit windows. No coffee/tea/kettle facilities in room or communal areas. Clean but cluttered. Left early for Ferry, the reason for going to PR so unable to comment on breakfast. Luckily we had taken our own provisions.
