I was travelling alone and found the area very safe for a woman to walk around the streets or beach any time of day or night. Police and military police were always doing rounds and always one of them in view at all times.

Progreso needs a lot of tlc but they have started with the Malecom which is now very good with some good restaurants and mostly pedestrianisd

Not overly touristy when no cruise ships in port. Just walk a few streets back from the hotel to see the real town.
"Everyone was friendly as soon as we walked in. Check in desk is right outside the property which is the set up. My kids stayed a night before us and said that the food wasn't that great. They told us not to order the pizza but said that the waffles are good. Kids will be honest so, take your pick. There is a burger king down the road and a coffee shop right outside the property. "
